EFFECTIVE WAYS YOU CAN PROTECT YOUR BODY AND YOUR MIND

We all want to be healthy and we all know that prevention is better than cure, but how do you go about protecting your body and your mind?

Truly, it’s the million-dollar question!!

With more and more of us taking an interest in health and well-being, now is a really great time to be proactive in promoting (and engaging in) effective ways to look after ourselves.

We know that when you start to research this topic you can quickly become overwhelmed by information.

So, we want to help by keeping it short and sweet.

Here are some simple, effective steps that you can start implementing today.

Increase activity levels

Increasing activity levels is one of the best ways to nourish and protect your mental and physical health.

We tend to focus on benefits for our bodies when talking about exercise and training, but being generally a little bit more active in our day-to-day activities is also incredibly beneficial for our minds. A true double-whammy!

When you walk, go for a hike, roll around on the floor with your kids for hours, or play sports, your body releases endorphins, and the levels of serotonin and dopamine in your brain increase. This creates a natural high, which boosts energy levels and makes you feel great.

If you’re not an active person currently, start by setting yourself some really attainable targets. You don’t have to live at the gym or run miles every day to get fit and enjoy the rewards of an active lifestyle. You just need to move the beautiful body that you call yours.

You can dance, spin, stretch, jump, run, skip, swim or cycle your way to better health. Try a range of activities, get friends and relatives involved and do whatever you have to do in order to make exercise fun (for you).

Reduce the risk of accidents and injuries

Some accidents and injuries are inevitable, but often, incidents can be prevented so we always recommend trying to assess risks and protect yourself from danger before it happens.

Simple things like warming up and cooling down and using protective equipment/clothing when playing sports and exercising can make a big difference. Take care when you’re doing activities like climbing or, as silly as it may sound, walking up and down the stairs! You wouldn’t believe how many accidents happen from a staircase.

If you want to feel even safer and more secure, it can be incredibly beneficial to learn first aid in case you sustain injuries or you need to help others in an emergency. You can learn more about courses online. It’s also helpful to be aware of hazards or risks that apply to you specifically in your everyday life - for example, a risk of back pain from sitting at a desk for long periods or hearing loss linked to working in a noisy environment.

If you know the risks, you can take steps to prevent problems, such as using ear protectors or adjusting your office chair and desk to maintain good posture.

Manage stress

Stress is extremely common, so don’t feel like you’re failing at keeping everything together. We’re all a little bit stressed, somehow.

In most cases, we can cope with mild stress, but there is a risk that symptoms could develop and cause long-term problems. Severe stress can impact everything from your mood and your performance at work to your physical health and your ability to sleep. Try to manage stress as best you can and minimize exposure to triggers and situations that make you feel uneasy, anxious, or overwhelmed.

Take time to relax and rest and prioritize separating your work from your social life. Devote time to hobbies, people, or activities that lift your spirits (we call these cup fillers at Dunnebells) and improve your mental health and seek help and advice if you are struggling.

This could relate to your workload, your health, your finances, or your relationships, for example. You should never feel that you have to soldier on alone. Community, connection, and support are extremely important and should be invested in.

Oh, and if you’re not yet aware, putting your phone away more often will reduce your stress. Less screen time is amazing for the whole family!

SUMMARIZING WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR BODY AND MIND

Good health is something we often take for granted and it’s vitally important that we don’t wait to realize how wonderful it is until things go wrong.

It’s not always possible to avoid health issues, but there are some effective ways to protect your body and mind. Adopt an active lifestyle, try to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries, and manage stress.
